Age of Empires 2 DE fix + Back to Rome DLC works!
Great news about the Age of Empires 2 DE port! It stopped working in their latest update 93001, but luckily it was quite easily fixed again in my wrapper update this afternoon. So if your game doesn’t launch anymore. Delete the port in Porting Kit and re-install it, to fix it.
But, that’s not everything. There is more great news, I saw that the Return for Rome DLC was released! I bought it cheap on Kinguin and added the steam serial in the already installed Age of Empires 2 DE Steam port. You will notice, that the Age of Empires 2 DE will update and add the DLC.
In Steam you will then see a purple banner that the new DLC has been added to the main game of Age of Empires 2 DE. When you launch the game and get into the game menu, you will notice the DLC, in the left upper corner. When you click it, the DLC will open and will be asked to play multiplayer or Singleplayer.
I tested a singleplayer campaign mission and it works just great :) I tried to make a tutorial movie with the new DLC, but unfortunately it was instantly removed from youtube, because of “legal infriction”. So I am afraid I keep it by a few screenshot and a game DLC trailer. Have fun!

Good news is that the wrapper now works and launches the app! Bad news is my performance is way way down. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
There is not much I can do right now about the Performance (its already optimized), accepts lowering the video settings a bit. But when CX23 Arrives, it will be getting better again. So hold on for a little bit. Expect the engine hopefully next week.
When I played it on my M1 Apple Silicon Macbook pro, it worked pretty neat, but didn’t check fps.
I can’t install the game since Steam doesn’t start after an update box briefly appears.
Thanks a lot.
BTW, my performance has increased drastically after this new fix. Before this fix, I had to reduce my display resolution to barely get into 1v1 ranked. Now, I can do 4v4 ranked as well without dailing down my resolution.
The game might’ve reduced the performance requirements for ranked multiplayer and this has nothing to do with the fix, no idea.
Hey unfortunately it doesn’t open on Steam for some reason
Ok, performance should be better, got 1248 points.
Hi Paul, my friend and I have been running AOE2 DE since the port came out – we just noticed when we had to reinstall due to the issues with steam (Nov ’24) that it seems like our performance has taken a significant dive. Previously we had no issues with lag, but after reinstalling the lag basically breaks the game after some time. He’s on a base M1 Mac Mini and I’m on a M3 Max (the M3 Max is still fine – but probably down a few hundred points in benchmark, but his M1 is now struggling to keep up). Nothing else has changed apart from reinstalling for the first time in probably a year or whenever the last time steam broke.
Any thoughts as to what might have changed in that time? Kind regards, Dave
Some further information on this- host a multiplayer game makes the problem way worse; my M3 is even now grinding to an essentially a halt. A quick way to replicate this is to host a multiplayer game with four AI players (I guess 2 players would also work), turbo mode with very high resources), then resign and just watch.
The CPU seems fine and the GPU is not being stressed at all. The metal hud shows lots of spikes in the “pre” time.
I filled a support ticket on porting kit, but thought I’d update this as well.
