Alpha Centauri gets Widescreen update!
Another game (Widescreen) update which is this time Apple silicon only! Alpha Centauri is now officially M1/M2 Apple Silicon compatible. We are working hard to make more and more games M1/M2 Apple silicon compatible. This work is really time consuming (lots of testing and research) and that’s why it takes so long sometimes for a game to be updated. So we are happy to announce that now Alpha Centauri is also among the games working for al Macs (Intel/apple Silicon). For Apple Silicon even Widescreen!! Unfortunately the widescreen patch seems not to work for Intel based Macs (at the moment), so skip the patch when you have an Intel based Mac with AMD/Nvidia/Intel GFX. We used the pracx patch to make the game widescreen for Apple Silicon.
The patch install is added at the end of the installation process (when intel based Mac, skip/cancel this extra installer), so if you finished the GOG installer of the game, and the patch installer starts, make sure you will navigate to the correct GOG game folder (when asked) (“This computer” –> C:\GOG Games\Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri\).
Don’t know how again or new to Porting Kit? Check the install instructions below
Don’t you have Porting Kit yet? Download it quickly from the Porting Kit website here…

To avoid others wasting some time on this: Download the WINDOWS installer from the GOG page, not either of the Mac installers. :)
Yup, a common mistake. Its also mentioned in the port description.
Paul – thanks for posting about this! The Porting Kit installer was a bit wonky on my M2 Macbook Air but I eventually got it to work – for some reason, it my GOG backup installer hangs and eventually gives up, but the wrapper gets created with the M1/M2 patch. Luckily, I have an XP virtual machine, and ran the installer in here before copying the GOG program files directory into the wrapper and applying the patch.
After about 10 turns playing AC, I get 2 additional Wine processes that launch into my macOS dock which also freeze the game, requiring a force quit. New games/reinstalling all result in this. Any ideas what this may be from? I’d be happy to share any logs if that could help diagnose. Thanks again for the incredible work!
