Time for more “Windows” Apps in Porting Kit!

Yes, it has been a hot topic, but yes we want to fill up Porting Kit with more Applications which seem to have only have a Windows version. As you may have noticed we already have already a filter in Porting Kit to filter out “Games” or “Software”, so now it gets also time to really fill the database up with more Windows Software ports!

I want to start with some free very popular Windows apps into Porting Kit which has no Mac version (or recent Mac versions/dropped support for Mac) or full apps which can be unlocked to full versions with a key or something.

Fill the comments of this post with suggestions and I will take a look what’s possible in my power to add them to Porting Kit!

Crossover 22 released!

Great news! Crossover 22 has been released by Codeweavers! Crossover has been updated to Wine 7.7 which includes over 10,000 improvements and better support for Directx11 games (64bit).

We are working hard to get a CX22 engine in Portingkit as well, but it takes a bit of time (weeks). Until that time or if you prefer Crossover above Porting Kit, then enjoy Crossover 22! By buying the application using the links up here you are a direct supporter of Porting Kit!

Heroes of Might and Magic 4 Mod patch and Apple Silicon fix.

We already informed about the HD fix of Heroes 3, but we are happy to inform that we have also added a fix/mod for Heroes of Might and Magic 4!This patch fixes the issue for M1 Apple Silicon + some extra bonuses.

So in short. If you love the features and have the game already installed, then delete the port and reinstall the port for the extra patch package!

Here also counts, because of the changes and extra install instructions of the MOD, I made a new video tutorial which can be seen below and is also added in the game port video. Have fun!!

Linux Porting Kit version in Alpha, testers requested!

Great news! Vitor made a lot of progress with the Linux version of Porting Kit. We are now in the phase where we can use a bunch of testers to test every inch of the app for Linux usage! So if you have a Linux machine/partition, then contact us using the contact form, and Vitor will provide you access to the Linux version of Porting Kit. At the moment Port Creation is working with a couple of basic engines and X11 support (Mac driver is of course not available in Linux) which works quite well in Linux. The app will be updated regularly with major changes.

(Sticky) M2 Apple Silicon Macbook Pro funding campaign!

I am not really the “begging” for funding guy, but the need for an M2 MacBook pro for testing purposes, and the recent economy, forces me to make an exception. As you may know I am busy with a lot of testing to make games work on even the latest M1/M2 Apple Silicon Macs. But it seems that the M1 Apple Silicon MacBook air, is able to run games which somehow doesn’t run on M1/M2 MacBook/iMac/Mac Pro’s. In order for good testing I need a M2 MacBook Pro device (now dependent on tests by other users). While those devices are quite costly I will put up a funding campaign so I will be able to support all new Macs! The MacBook Pro costs € 1.619 (in the Netherlands), and when the amount is reached, this crowdfunding post will be un-stickied.

€630= 39% pledged so far! thanks so much!

Every amount of support is really appreciated and can be done by Paypal or direct deposit (for the last one sent me an e-mail for details) or become a Patron for a while. For the ones who will support me is directly investing and building in making Mac gaming on new Apple Silicon possible. The never-ending gratitude from everyone using Porting Kit and a personal thanks is credited to you as an supporter.

I will make this post sticky for a while so, scroll the page down for the latest news.

Dreamfall: Longest journey fixed for latest M1/M2 Models.

As you all may know we have for especially older games a “challenge” regarding the latest M1/M2 Apple Silicon Mac’s. Low Resolution games of 640×480 and 800×600 or even 1024×768 in some will not work on some of the latest M1/M2 Macs/Screens. We are working hard by using all kind of mod’s hacks, patches, to make them compatible with with latest M1/M2 Macs. This regularly takes a lot of research to make it all work properly, so that’s why I am happy introduce more and more fixes for games which are compatible to all new Macs.

Today Dreamfall – The Longest Journey is added to the list. It is patched this way that it launches in 1280×800 resolution fitting to all Macs (also M1/M2 Apple Silicon) capable to run High Sierra 10.13.x and up :) So if you love adventure games, then this one might be something for you.

Myst IV Revelation Apple Silicon compatible + Outlaws Apple silicon workaround.

Great news! as you may already know Apple Silicon Compatibility is something in progress. A couple of known issues for Apple silicon are:
1. Bad support for a bunch low resolution games
2. Some games laggg (slow) on Apple Silicon
3. Some glitches in some games.

All these points are improving in every new engine which comes out and on newer Mac OS releases. However. For point 1, there are for some games workarounds available which will have my attention (besides all other stuff). I managed to “fix” 2 games past days, with 1 great fix (Myst IV Revelation) and a workaround for “Outlaws + handful of missions” (using windowed mode).

Myst IV Revelation:
Myst IV wouldn’t start on Apple Silicon Mac’s because of the 640×480 resolution, so I made a change in the config so it will launch in 1024×768, which fixed the bug instantly. It has great performance on the M1 Apple Silicon Mac. So if you don’t have Myst IV – Revelation yet, then get it on GOG.com and install and play it in Porting Kit on your Apple Silicon Mac.

Outlaws:
For Outlaws more or less a limited workaround by making it Windowed mode in 800×600 Resolution using the newly added config launcher. It’s unfortunately not full screen, but better this then nothing I would say (see screenshot). Still very pleasing to play.

More updated games with resolution fixes and workarounds for Apple Silicon is in the making! Keep an eye on the blog.

New coming features Porting Kit and Basics Linux Porting Kit is ready.

Here a quick heads up about Porting Kit. As we already mentions, if it’s a bit quiet regarding new ports, then it doesn’t mean that we are sitting still. On the contrary. We are happy to share some news about future features and support, starting about chat and multiplayer/LAN support.

As you may remember, a year back we talked about a bunch of features from which a couple are already realized and a few still in queue, from which Chat and LAN/multiplayer support. To do this we will add Discord integration into Porting Kit using an API, which will make friends list/chat possible including network support, which would allow us to provide multiplayer for games that support LAN. We have no clear ETA for when it’s finished but then you know now some more details regarding that.

Second, Linux support. Yeah, that one was long on the todo list, but it’s now getting closer to realization. In matter of fact, the basics are even ready! Basic port creation is ready, now we have to work out the details with doing Winetricks and having Linux based Engines. Below a video with a sneak peak on Ubuntu! ETA? We hope to have it ready even this year! Yes a lot of exciting stuff! Keep an eye on the blog for updates and thanks for your support and bearing with us. It means a lot to us.

Crossover 22 Beta 1 release!

Great news! I received an e-mail that the beta 1 version of CX22 has been released. This means that after it gets released after some weeks testing a new engine will follow for Portingkit as well!! Better support for Apple Silicon and games!

CrossOver 22 includes an update to Wine 7.7, bringing with it over 10,000 changes that offer improvements to a variety of applications. This release also includes an update to Wine Mono 7.2.0 and vkd3d 1.4.

On the macOS side, we have been continuing to make gaming performance improvements. Between including the wined3d changes available with Wine 7.7, updating to MoltenVK version 1.1.10 and adding a few other tweaks, we’ve made quite a bit of progress. One particularly exciting example is Rocket League: the performance using wined3d is much better than CrossOver 21.2, and the nameplates are visible in-game (unlike using DXVK).

Our initial tests show that CrossOver 22 runs pretty well on the macOS Ventura beta. While we do not recommend that anyone start using the Ventura beta if they aren’t already, we welcome your beta reports about how 22 is running on Ventura. Note: while we will aggressively fix any issues with running CrossOver 22 on Ventura, we cannot offer official support for Ventura until it is released due to the possibility of changes during beta causing problems for CrossOver support.

So nice things ahead! Keep an eye on the blog for updates. It’s testing time now, so lets see what this update will all fix and what new games are now working which didn’t in the past :)
