Portingkit and Wineskin fixes and Mac OS Catalina (64-bit only)!

Portingkit and Wineskin fixes and Mac OS Catalina (64-bit only)!

Since the unofficial Wrapper was integrated, there seems there have been some nasty bugs in Portingkit. Most of the problems were related on both sides having a few issues which ended up in some install failures. Most of them are now luckily fixed and Porting Kit is because of that much more stable now. Thanks to some good troubleshooting of Gcenx and Vitor, we have Portingkit way more where we want it to be.

Update upcoming 64bit only 10.15 Catalina:
Although the good news above, here also a status update of the coming of the new Mac OS 10.15 Catalina. We haven’t processed a lot yet because of lot’s work/business in out private lives. The first focus is a Linux version, which is in development, but is still in starting fase. So there is still lots of work to do. One thing is for sure, we will not make it when the New OS Catalina gets released. We will do our best to get a something “Virtual” around, but it will be quite later after the release of Catalina.

So if you still want to use Porting Kit after release of Catalina, make sure you turn off the the automatic update. Because if you update to Mac OS Catalina, 32bit will be totally dead and portingkit itself will open up fine, but the 32bit games will not launch anymore. “But if you create a 64bit engine, will the games then not work?” No because the games itself are still 32bit and calls one 32bit processes, which simply cannot be done anymore. Simply and plainly, Apple pulls the plug and it seems there is no way back…. So the advise!? Don’t update to OS Catalina if you love (older) games!!!

Portingkit 3.0 beta has been released!

Yes finally after some delay the beta of Porting Kit 3.0 has been released! It contains fixes and a total restructure of the Porting Kit graphical interface.

The GUI overhaul was been chosen because of some confusement with the local library tab and the server tab. With this new look we hope to have everything in view. On the right the window where you can find all game ports added on the database. On the left all your installed game ports.

When clicking on the “v” at the end of a game port, you have all the usual options. Besides that you can click on the game port and the usual view of the trailer and the “Play” and “More” options will be there as all times. When you want to see al server/database ports again, click the back “<” button to get the main view in the library.

Besides the Graphical change the update contains also lots of fixes, like: Showing all icons when searching for specific game. (earlier the last row was showing a windmill (loading icon), Winetrick fix (Directx9) which was failing and thus dozens of games were not working properly. And some more. See all changes below. Before the stable 3.0 release we at least want to fix the extra error bugs you regularly get with installing (read not the GOG.com installation errors) which has to do somehow with the “Unofficial wine engines”. But we had to release the update to fix some important bugs.

You can update to the latest beta by updating manually using the Portingkit menu ==> and choose “check for updates”. If it is greyed out, then restart Porting Kit first. Enjoy!!!

Changes:

  • Added: New library that merges the local and the server libraries
  • Fixed: Alerts should have the Dark style in macOS 10.13- if the Dark mode is selected
  • Fixed: Avoiding exception while listing Wineskin available engines
  • Fixed: The directx9 winetrick should be installed with an older version of winetricks
  • Fixed: Engines listing should work properly in the legacy version
  • Added: Support to the Intel Coffee Lake CPU and Intel UHD
  • Improved: Crash Logs send by PK
  • Changed: If your computer is incompatible with the Porting Kit, it should close on startup after giving the warning
  • Fixed: Avoiding error when running Wineskin wrapper through library
  • Fixed: Only one port can be installed at a time

MacOS Catalina is nearing! Don’t do it (Yet)!!

MacOS Catalina is nearing! Don't do it (Yet)!!

Yeah, time is going fast and we are far behind and there is lot’s to do regarding the new Mac OS Catalina. Apple thinks they are gracious enough with the time to get everything ready. But simply said. Mac OS Catalina is 64bit and will kill all your 32bit games…. True story. So if you want to play any old and newer 32-bit games , then don’t do it!

“But if you make Porting Kit 64bit, is it not resolved?” Nope, the games itself are 32-bit and have 32-bit processes, and simply won’t work anymore. Only 64bit games. “Does this mean everything is lost?” No! not yet. We are planing to make a Linux version of Porting Kit. This in combination with a tiny Linux distro with wine, will make it technically possible to still be able to play 32bit games in a kind of VM and not needing Windows or bootcamp. Yes it’s a hell of a job and it takes time and patience and for you guys not to update to Mac OS Catalina to be able to play your games. We will keep you guys in the loop with the process. If you are a Mac/Linux coder/programmer and want to contribute helping us, contact us (Vitor) using the contact form, so stuff can speed up. Thanks for your  tremendous patience and support!

We will make this topic sticky for a while, so for other updates, game releases and news just scroll down. the news page.

Over 25 Steam wrapper updates with Steam Store/Chat fixes.

Good news. I updated over 25 Steam games wrappers which contains fixes for the Steam Store and Steam Chat! I already talked about that 2 weeks back, and made then a few updates, but now over 25 most popular Steam Wrappers have been updated. It is always hard to maintain changes which the Game Client publishers do (Steam/Origin/Uplay/GOG Galaxy). And we always try to keep up, but this is not always possible due to Wine developing (not fixed in Wine yet) or due to lack of time (we not getting to it to fix because of lack of time).

Anyways, I worked down the list from popular games to less popular games. The Wrapper upgrades do not only contain fixes of Steam, but may also improve performance and have bugfixes. If your game(s) is/are in the list I advise to backup the existing wrapper somewhere and delete it in Porting Kit and reinstall the updated port. Enjoy!

List of updated Steam wrappers:
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
Elderscrolls III – Morrowind
Sniper Ghost Warrior 2
Southpark Stick of Truth
Call of Duty – World at War
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Payday the Heist
Payday 2
Pro Evolution Soccer 2016
Pro Evolution Soccer 2017
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
NBA 2k14
Sid Meier’s Civilization 3
Knights of Honor
Company of Heroes
Hitman IV – Blood Money
ARMA 2
Stronghold Collection
Supreme Commander
Supreme Commander 2
Supreme Commander – Forged Aliance
Dishonored

Have fun with the updated wrappers. The ports will contain an “updated” badge in the Porting Kit.

Steam Chat en Store Fix getting implemented on Steam ports!

Great news! As you all may know now Windows XP is not supported anymore by Steam. Because of that the Windows version needed to be set to Windows 7 which came with a bug that the store and chat functionality, didn’t work with the Windows 7 version of Steam. This has luckily been addressed in the latest W10 engines Gcex has created for Porting Kit and Wineskin. I managed to update some popular Steam Wrappers already, but it may take a bit to update all Steam wrappers. I hope to have them all done within about 2 months.

Steam Wrapper updates + Fixes:
– Age of Empires 2 HD
– Age of Empires 3 Complete
– Steambuild 1
– Steambuild 2
Bully (Works now also on Intel HD/Iris)
– Company of Heroes
– Warhammer 40K – Dawn of War
– Warhammer 40K – Dawn of War Master Collection
– Warhammer 40K – Dawn of War Soul Storm
– Alien Breed 3D Trilogy

If you have one of these games already installed and want the steam store and Steam chat fixed, then consider a new install of the port. The fixes will be automatically implemented when you  trash the old port and reinstall. Enjoy! A new list of Steam Wrapper updates will follow weekly.

Wrapper updates: Stronghold Crusader 2 and Trails in the Sky SC and Trails in the Sky the 3rd.

Here a quick post of a few not unimportant games. Both games have separate fixes.

Stronghold Crusader 2
– Updated to latest Wine engine
– Fix of launching the game.
– Performance improvements and bug fixes.

Trails in the Sky SC and Trails in the Sky the 3rd:
– Launch fix. Games needed now to launch with a config file, when this is not saved/set, the game wouldn’t launch. Config as set as main start .exe now.

When you own the games already, download the “offline backup setup files” from your GOG.com game library into your download folder, and search the game in the Porting Kit and click “install”. or go to the Porting Kit game page up here… for Stronghold Crusader 2 and here for Trails in the Sky SC and Trails in the Sky the 3rd. Click the “Install now” button there.

Don’t own the game yet? Get the games on GOG.com here…and here…

Lots of Wrapper updates!

Lots of Wrapper updates!

And some many more Wrapper updates! GOG.com updated a lot of setup file names which caused some setup mismatches. Also there was a game which has been changed from DOS version to SCUMVM version. Besides that some other games needing and update to work proper again. If that is enough we updated all the Steambuild wrappers to the unofficial WS10 engine which fixes the Steam Store and Steam Chat with friends. This unofficial WS10 is not applied yet on all Steam games because not all games work properly in the WS10 Engine, so through time we hope to update all Steam wrappers with the fix, but until now we first need to meet up some challenges/bugs to resolve. Stay tuned!

So here a bunch of games received an update:

Setup mismatch fix updates:
Settlers IV
Settlers V
Caesar II
Heroes of Might & Magic 2
Star Wars Rebellion

DOS => ScumVM Fix update:
– Phantasmagoria

Other Wrapper Fixes:
– Commandos Beyond the Call of Duty
Rune Classic
Might & Magic 8

Enjoy the wrapper updates! And oh, get the games cheap up to 90% off while you can on the still running Spring Sale on GOG.com!

We rely on you guys because we cannot test all 1000+ games regularly, so we need to know it from you guys if you run into it. Thanks in advance!

Important Porting Kit update!

Important Porting Kit update!

It seemed that one of the latest PK versions breaks the Winetricks installations. This causes for lots of ports which needs the Winetricks, to not function properly. So this also means for Origin! Besides that, Porting Kit had all kind of weird issues in Mojave because of simply that Mac OS is full of bugs :P. Luckily Gcex which is still maintaining the Wineskin source,  adjust Wineskin to handle these bugs of slowness to launch, lots of processor usage, and more. That’s why for Mojave users, we forced the Unofficial Wineskin version by default. This will fix a lot of issues Mojave users have lately. There are some more updates as mentioned below:

  • Fixed: VMWare virtual machines with invalid video memory shouldn’t prompt has invalid
  • Fixed: If the user try to create a custom port with no engine selected, PK shouldn’t crash
  • Changed: If the video card memory size can’t be detected, but the video card has no kext, it should not be reported to GA
  • Improved: If you are using macOS Mojave, the unofficial wrapper should be mandatory
  • Fixed: Winetricks should work in the unofficial Wineskin

So, everyone please, make sure to update to the latest version of PK by checking for updates, using the Porting Kit top bar menu –> and then check for updates. Enjoy!
