Wings Remastered video + review!

A little bit later then expected, but as promised here the video tutorial of Wings: Remastered Edition! Because of this extra post I take the opportunity to make a little review of the game as well.

For the Amiga fans Wings was the best WW1 Flight Simulator around and was very popular. And as an old Amiga fan I was thrilled to see the Remastered version arriving at GOG.com. I got the game. Ported it to the Mac and did some tests on my Intel Graphics HD 4000 Macbook with Yosemite and Nvidia 640M iMac and it works awesome. I launched the game and saw the startup videos as it should be, and got into the game menu. I created a pilot and started the tutorials. First the 3d simulation”destroy the balloon” mission and then the 2 non-simulator missions destroying the crates and bombing the 2 barracks. All 3 “Born to fly” successful! Then you can join the squadron and start the campaign. Your logbook starts and you get thrown at the one mission to another.

I really loved the 3d Simulation air-battles when I was totally outnumbered and downing one opponent another. I have to say it is much more easier to shoot down a plane then in the original Wings Amiga Emulated edition. But this might also be because I choose the difficulty level”easy”. While playing about 1.5 hours of game-play I am starting to be really glad of this port result, and giving this port a 5 out 5 rating. Not only because of the test result, but being an old Amiga fan might have helped a bit as well ;) Enjoy the game and really recommend this one!

Wine 1.7.32 released!

Another new Wine version is out on WineHQ since yesterday! The wine version is now build in an engine and is available in “Winery“. See more details below and on WineHQ.

You can change the wine engine in existing Wrappers doing: Right-click Wrapper –> show package content –> wineskin –. advanced –> tools –> change engine –> change it to the latest engine you downloaded, in this case 1.7.32.

The Wine development release 1.7.32 is now available.

What’s new in this release:

  • New version of the Mono engine.
  • A few more functions implemented in MSHTML.

Introduction of the Portingkit!

A lot of of things have happened this year, and even though this year has 1.5 months to go, there will be a great new feature….or better said “Application” coming up! This Application is called: “The Portingkit” and is mind-blowing if a may say it myself! This makes hosting wrappers unnecessary anymore, because instead the app will download a small script (WSI files) which will automatically download the specific Wine engine, apply the tweaks and will even contain the specific game related paulthetall.com branded icon! If the game port is a free/demo game, then it will automatically download and install the game in the wrapper as well! A dream app for Mac users! This program will be a mixture of Steam/Crossover with very cool features like ranking and launching from the app itself and much more and much more to come! In the end all the ports I have done will be added in the Portingkit application and no more file hosting will be needed on my end :)

The Portingkit is developed by Vitor Marques (creator of Gamma Studio) on my request and which will closely work together with the Porting Center (also developed by Vitor Marques). The Porting Center is the application where the WSI files are been created for the Portingkit. Not much knowledge is required to create WSI files, so in not to long we can have have a big community who can contribute there own Wrapper ports. There will be also a separate website for the Portingkit (not live yet) hosted by me where the program is hosted and maintained. We hope to release the first Beta and more info in the coming weeks! So stay tuned!!

New Steambuild release: Steambuild1DirectPlay!

If something is hard, then it is making Steam Wrappers where as much games work as possible. Because one game needs other stuff then other games, and if one game needs a tweak which makes other games crash, we automatically come to a point we have to expand the Steambuild Wrappers.

Luckily in not to long all this is not necessary anymore because of the coming new Paulthetall.com app will make individual Steam Wrappers where needed! But for now I added another Steambuild for some other games which need Directplay to play Multiplayer games, like Railroad Tycoon 2 . Beccause Directplay hinders other Multiplayer games, I made a seperate Wrapper for this one. Hope you guys will enjoy it.

Oddworld Strangers Wrath Wrapper update!

There are still a few dozen of games for which I had no back-up and the wrapper went lost because of the Open Drive issue last week. For those I am making new updated wrappers, for example Oddworld Strangers Wrath HD. Wrapper was missing and now I made an update of the Wrapper including a new cool paulthetall.com branded icon. Enjoy!

Changes:
– Updated Wine Engine
– New Paulthetall.com branded Icon.

Crossover 14 released!

Crossover had a mayor update a few days back to version 14 already! If you don’t know the product Crossover, check the about page on my site to see what the program is and does. It is commercial software, but they made Wine as it is today, so supporting them by buying the software will increase development of the opensource software Wine. You can update crossover when own it already when the message popups to update the software (if your license didn’t expired already). If you want to update it you can buy it up here… and with the promo code paulthetall you get 25% off as a bonus :)  I will make a video tutorial soon with the changes of the new GUI, because a lot of changed in Crossover 14. See all improvements and changes below

Mac OSX:
CrossOver’s Graphical User Interface has been entirely redone. Windows applications can now be easily launched from within CrossOver itself, and much of the rest of the user interface has been simplified. The CrossOver Software Installer more prominently displays all search results when a user searches for an application to install, making it easier to find the desired application.

Application Support:
New Supported Applications:
CrossOver now supports Quicken 2015 on both OS X and Linux.
CrossOver now supports Cube World on both OS X and Linux.
CrossOver now supports Path of Exile on both OS X and Linux.
CrossOver now supports Euro Truck Simulator 2 on both OS X and Linux.
CrossOver now supports Terraria on both OS X and Linux.
CrossOver now supports South Park: The Stick of Truth on both OS X and Linux.
CrossOver now supports Xenonauts both OS X and Linux.

Bug fixes:
The “Save a copy as” feature in Quicken 2014 is now functional.
Quicken 2014 is now able to validate data files.
Quicken 2014 now displays its update notice correctly.
Quicken 2014 will now remember when its windows are re-sized.
Scrolling using a trackpad on an Apple laptop will now work in Quicken 2014.
Formatting of message timestamps in Outlook 2010 has been improved.
Many games – Deus Ex: Human Revolution – no longer require the Legacy X Window System to run on OS X. CrossOver’s built-in web browser has improved and now loads more sites, including the U-Haul website and the website for the United States Copyright Office. Steam can now be hidden reliably on OS X. Legacy Family Tree 7 will now run under CrossOver on OS X. Printing will now work when MathType is installed alongside Word 2007.

Other Improvements:
CrossOver 14.0.0 is based on Wine 1.7.25 which includes over 5,000 patches that fix bugs and add greater Windows compatibility.

Opendrive issue resolved!!

After some hard work I managed to fix all all the links from Opendrive. You still might run into a handful of them which slipped the through my hands, but yes normally all links should work again. If you still run into some links which don’t work, then please let me know so I can fix them. Meanwhile I am migrating the files left on Filefactory to the 2 filehosters left I use. Again, with the coming Paulthetall.com which comes out very soon, now file hosting will be necessary anymore.

Opendrive problem status update!

As I mentioned earlier there is and almost “was” an issue with Open-Drive hosting. All wrapper download files seems to be gone up there….this means about 200 downloads weren’t working anymore. Status is that I re-uploaded and link 80% of the files again. It was a hell of a job and tomorrow I will run through the last ones. The problem was that Opendrive got a copyright claim of Theesa about 2 wrappers of mine, which was of course a false claim, because the Wrapper only contains the Wine Wrapper and not the game itself. But instead of notifying me about it, so I could explain their stupid ungrounded claim, they already closed my account including all my wrappers host there!!!

So I went in contact with Theesa, and explained the situation, but don’t respond at all. They don’t seem to care if they do false claims. They didn’t even checked the wrapper, but just made a claim because of the name. It is so lame… And Opendrive? I am so pissed on them and won’t recommend them for your file-hosting in any way because of their policy! Anyway I re-uploaded most of the files now somewhere else and do the last hand of it tomorrow. Luckily this kind of issues won’t be there when the paulthetall.com app got released very soon….
