The future of Wine on Mac….Wine dead on Mac in 18 months?

The future of Wine on Mac....Wine dead on Mac in 18 months?

I see you thinking, wine dead in 18 months? Yeah, it’s a very very good possibility (not joking here…) “What does that mean? How come? ” Well, it’s the decision of Apple, “no more compromise”….to go over to 64 bit only. That will start in High Sierra 10.13x (yeah where we are in now and where we already ran into bumps), and most likely end in 64bit only next year already!!. “Hey wait, you guys mentioned that you are working on 64-bit Wine app?”.  Yep that’s correct, but that doesn’t solve the fact that the games are still 32-bit, and Apple won’t accept 32-bit processes. This can’t be fixed by using a 64-bit Engine and creating a 64-bit Wineskin app unfortunately.

“So all is lost?” Well we have little hope on a specific project called “hangover” which Codeweavers (yeah from Crossover) and the wine community started up to find a way to keep Wine working on Mac (64bit) using ARM Emulator (an emulator between the windows app and the real CPU that we can put in any mode) which is a building block and would still need a lot of work (if even proven “workable/not too slow”) to be useful on the new Mac OS. There are maybe a few similar options, but also requires “emulation/virtualization” which means slow. So in short, there needs to come a solution (and I mean fast) but the “possible” (hope/pray)  alternatives takes a lot of time to implant. Alexandre Julliart isn’t really mourning about that (and he shouldn’t), because Apple seems to be lost at this moment. It looks like everyone needs to adapt to the changes they make, we (wine(skin) community) had already to adapt 3 times already because of OS updates in the past years, and now it looks like they are about to give the final blow.

“So now what?” Well, thought about alternative solutions as well, and fell back to the same kind of solutions as Codeweavers comes with (emulation/virtualization) but then again you can even better put also VM’s and bootcamp on your system, and that’s not what we want.

So we are building hard on a Linux version of Porting Kit, so not all years we put in Porting Kit and into all the game ports, are lost. In that way we can still continue our vision on Linux, although  in that case it will end for Mac in OS 10.13x or maybe even 10.14x. It’s not what we want, but Apple leaves is in that case no choice to abandon the sinking ship. For me if it comes that far that there is no solution for the 32-bit support drop, I will move over to Linux as well and we keep Porting Kit supported for Mac until OSX 10.14 and not above. Before it comes that far, let’s first hope there will be a solution in these 18 months after all… Halloween sale up to 90% off! Halloween sale up to 90% off!

Important Porting Kit update!

Important Porting Kit update!

Because of a website problem with , there was an update necessary which caused the Porting Kit to disfunction. WSI file didn’t install anymore. So we were forced to update the porting kit as well with a fix. So this results into a message in your Porting Kit that you need to update PK in order to use the app properly.

The exact message is: “Your Porting Kit version is too outdated for downloading ports from the Porting Kit database. In order to install apps from the server tab properly, update the Porting Kit.”

Update the app by “check for updates” using the porting kit menu in top bar menu. Sorry for the inconvenience!

News about High Sierra Compatible Wineskin ports

News about High Sierra Compatible Wineskin ports

As promised, more news about the High Sierra non-compatible Wineskin ports on I received the good news from GOG, that they will update their game ports (about 25+ games) which are at the moment not compatible for High Sierra. The “initial-tentative-don’t-hold-us-to-it ETA” could be before end of the month :) I added before the news was out already 9 High Sierra+ compatible game ports into Porting Kit, so you can play those games in High Sierra. The games are: Nox, Mob Rule Classic, Space Colony HD, Shell Shock 2Icewind Dale 2 Complete, Planescape Torment Enhanced Edition, The Temple of Elemental Evil, and Lords of Realms 1 + 2. The Porting Kit ports will still be available if you want to use it instead of the Mac ports of and ready for the near future.

Yes near future, because the update will hold the dam for Wineskin only for a while, because when 10.14 arrives all apps needs to be 64bit and wineskin will be most likely at its end because development stopped ages ago. However! There is good news from us. We are building a new Wineskin like app which we will call “Prism” which will have a total new framework and 64bit and adapted to Porting Kit, loads of new and cool features and of course free for personal use :)

Banished Wrapper update with “music fix”!

Here another quick heads up! We updated the Banished (32bit) wrapper with a Music Fix. As you may know the recent port of course had sounds, but no music. This has been fixed now as well. Enjoy Banished in it’s full glory now, with sound and music! How to update? Trash or backup/move the old wrapper out of the applications\games folder and download the 32 bit Banished  GOG setup file into your download folder. Then in Porting Kit search the updated game on the server tab and install and play!

What’s new:
– Music fix!

Star Wars – Battlefront 2 Wrapper update!

I got some mails from people who tried to install Star Wars Battlefront 2, into Porting Kit, but it didn’t work anymore because first the setup was not automatically recognized + main exe path was changed + a new dll was required. All of this has to do with a recent update of the game on They released new installers with multiplayer support using GOG Galaxy (which is not available yet in Porting kit) and changed the setup files of the “Battle Front 2 Classic XP/Vista (no multiplayer)” version (which is supported in Porting Kit).

So, to play the game in Porting Kit you need to download the “Battle Front 2 Classic XP/Vista” setup files (not the ones for multiplayer) and let porting Kit install it and start the fun. We are looking to the Multiplayer Galaxy support version, but until then use the one mentioned above.

– Fixed auto-detect GOG setup file
– Updated main path .exe
– Fixed startup issue (extra binkw32.dll required)

Porting Kit 2.9.0 released!

We made a new release of Porting Kit which contains 2 dozens of changes and improvements. One of the most important and the one with the most impact is the new installer wizard feature! Yes thats right, with every install of a game there is install wizard which shows clear instructions and information about the installation, so installations will be even more a walk in the park!

Another cool improvements is that the Gecko/Mono windows will be closed automatically in the game installs, and lots of other bug fixes and small improvements for High Sierra as well.

Check out all the changes in the release notes here…

Some more news and Gwent fixed!

Ok, there is a lot going on at the moment considering High Sierra, so sorry for some days without blogposts. We found out that the open beta release of High Sierra 10.13 is a complete mess :P also for PK. So absolutely don’t update to High Sierra yet. It looks like thinks are fixed in 10.13.1 (beta). So at least wait for 10.13.1 and out green light to update.

Next to that we are working hard on an upgraded Wineskin which will be called Wineskin Navy. Which will be contain some important extras which is needed to fix for example killing the Pre-loader processes properly in the Winestaging engines and will through time be revamped and improved more and more fitting for Porting Kit.

Meanwhile we found a fix for Gwent (thanks for tip BTL) and updated the wrapper.

High Sierra…. yes or No?

High Sierra is available in the app store!! Many people are updating their OSX now to the latest High Sierra one. Is the new OS good news for Porting Kit?

A clear answer for now: Please wait until we tested it completely. At least if you still want to play your games. Why? It seems that it works fine with a SSD Mac with High Sierra, but brought massive issues on a normal SATA HDD drive for Wineskin, and thus also for Porting Kit. Winetricks were failing and port creation. It may be the specific beta build of High Sierra I used, but we aren’t sure until we check the final version.

In short, don’t upgrade until you hear a green light from here! We keep you guys posted….
