Rise of Nations Extended Edition for Mac

Update! 18 April: Fixed a bug in launching the game. If you experienced it before 18th April, please trash the old install and reinstall the port.
======================

On many request!! It’s here! Rise of Nations Extended Edition for Mac. It was long on the wishlist and now fulfilled! The Steam Game works very nicely and if you love strategy then this one is a must have in your game collection. I tested the game for a few levels and was quite impressed of the gameplay which is a bit like Empire Earth.

Game description:
Rise of Nations is a real-time strategy game that spans all history. Start with a single city in the Ancient Age; gather resources; build an infrastructure; research technologies; construct Wonders of the World such as the Pyramids and the Eiffel Tower; and expand your military might across the world, conquering hostile nations with bombers, battleships, and tanks—all over your lunch hour!

For Catalina users: Make sure SIP is disabled and that the Porting Kit app is located in your Apps/Application folder. If you want SIP to be enabled, I strongly recommend Crossover for now for the time being

Install instructions Steam:
– in Portingkit click install when the game is selected. This installs the Windows Steam client.
– After install. Close the install wizard properly.
– Click play to launch Steam. Login with your Steam account.
– When you own the game already in Steam, click install in your game library. If not use the links here to get it.
– After download click play! Have fun!

Red Alert 3 and Red Alert 3 Uprising available again in PK. Origin ports replaced by Steam.

As many of you may know, The EA Origin client is suffering big time in Wine after they shutdown support for XP and the old client. This change causes malfunction of some cool games like the C&C Red Alert 2 and C&C Red Alert 3. I tried to solve the issue with the latest Wine engines with no avail. However, hope is not lost. I managed to have it working using an alternative source, named Steam :) They Still have these games in their database, and I bought the Red Alert 3 Steam serials for you guys, in order to have it working as alternative for Origin. When the EA Origin Client through time is working again, I will re-add the Origin sources again.

I will replace where possible (Need for Speed undercover, Need for speed Shift, Need for speed – Hot Pursuit, Burnout Paradise,  C&C 3), with Steam ones. To start with Red Alert 3 + Uprising! Yes, and now both games work! In origin, there was a bug only that Red Alert 3 Uprising was working, but in the Steam version both games work :) Have fun!

Porting Kit 4.0 in progress and some more port fixes and “Yesterday” gets GOG.com version.

Porting Kit 4.0 in progress and some more port fixes and "Yesterday" gets GOG.com version.

Time is not standing still and a lot is going on in Porting Kit world. At first, past weeks I have done a lot of port updates and fixes. With some I only did only some text updates and for others fixes. I will name the list i’ve done. If you see a game you tried in the past and din’t work for you, please retest now :)

Fixed ports:

New GOG.com version added:

Porting Kit 4.0
Porting Kit 4.0 is coming soon! While Porting Kit 1/2/3 was made with old code and slow and is a bit buggy. Porting Kit 4.0 will be completely rewritten from the ground in Electron, which will make it platform compatible as well, which means PK can be released for Linux, or even Windows! But that’s not all, because it will be much faster, much more reliable, way more compatible for new changes like auto update of game ports when released, easily help to translate PK in every language, even more beautiful GUI, and much much more! Vitor is working hard on that project and has making good progress. We hope to inform you soon more about the process and new features. Keep a close eye on the blog!!

Steam client issues resolved and more news about Portingkit / Catalina support!

Steam Client issues Resolved!
Great news! The Steam client issues which has been around for a few months (but with workaround), has finally been resolved! The Steam-ports has been updated (couple ones left, will be done today and tomorrow Already done) and if you have a steam game installed and you want it to be fixed, it is required to delete the old port and reinstall the new/updated one. The fix also includes a working steam chat and a working store :)

Catalina 10.15*x OS support!
Besides this great news, we have other news as well. Very soon we will bring out an update of Porting Kit which is compatible with Catalina… BUT!!! Will work only with SIP disabled at the moment. SIP makes your Mac more secure, but with it’s limitations at prevents to let Porting Kit work properly. We are working on that, so if you prefer your Mac to optimal secure, then I advise to use Crossover for now until we have it working with SIP enabled as well. But for the people who don’t care about SIP and cannot wait, the option is there to use Porting Kit in Catalina when the update comes out :) Besides that it will still contain a few bugs (like it will ask to approve key-input in security with every launch of a game).

Other news!
Other existing bugs, like the “main exe not found” and some bonus error messages (besides the basic GOG installer error notifications) after an installation of the game, we think we found a fix for that as well and will be implemented in the next Porting Kit update! Last but not least, Vitor is working hard to rewrite Porting Kit from scratch so it will be also compatible for Linux and even Windows! But that’s not all, because when it is rewritten, it will be more stable and clean as well because of the renewing code which was old and outdated and containing bugs.

So bear with us for just little while longer before we can release an even better and cooler and more compatible Porting Kit!

Steam client issues after Steam update + workaround

I love GOG.com, why? It has offline installers. Yes they have GOG Galaxy, but they offer the offline setup files where we work with in Porting Kit. The Advantage? Not dependent on cliënt updates. Well, that exactly happened again with the Steam client. They change stuff which breaks things and voila, stuff is not working properly again. There has been 3 more times in the past where we had to do massive changes to make Steam games working properly again in Porting Kit.

The problem (now):
When you update your Steam client for an existing steam game port or installing a new Steam game port, you will be able to login, but the Steam window content will be black/or white… Menu’s are available, but the window content is black/white. As well for your library, the Steam Store, and other tabs.

The Workaround:
Luckily we found a few workarounds for this issue.  We start with the easiest one for the ones who have already a game installed and did the steam update. When you launch Steam you see in your top bar of your Mac screen a Steam bar icon. Right click it and select the game to launch it.

Or you can also use: “Small mode” using the “view” tab. Then it shows your library with the games you have.

The second solution counts also for new installed games:
It takes a bit extra effort, but this solution is allround. Go to te local port in porting kit after installation or when installed already. Then click “more” => “Wineskin tools” ==> “launch wineskin” => “advanced” ==> and there you find the info mentioned in the screenshot below until the text “sandbox”. The last part “-Applaunch xxxxx” is the part you need to add extra. For Age of Empires 2 HD for example that is “-applaunch 221380” (without quotes). You can find the app ID for your game in your browser when you go to the specific steam page for example: https://store.steampowered.com/app/221380/Age_of_Empires_II_2013/

So use the App ID number of the specific game to add the -applaunch flag. Make sure there is a space between the “sandbox” and the  “-applaunch” as mentioned in the screenshot. This last fix will result that when you launch the game/steam the first time, it will automatically come with the notification to install it. Accept it, and let it install the game. When installed, you can use the first fix mentioned using the Steam icon in top bar to launch it, or close steam and start it again using the play button. When you launch Steam, when the game is already installed, it will start the game instantly. When this issue is addressed in Wine, we will apply the fix in all the Steam game ports as well. We keep you informed!

Over 25 Steam wrapper updates with Steam Store/Chat fixes.

Good news. I updated over 25 Steam games wrappers which contains fixes for the Steam Store and Steam Chat! I already talked about that 2 weeks back, and made then a few updates, but now over 25 most popular Steam Wrappers have been updated. It is always hard to maintain changes which the Game Client publishers do (Steam/Origin/Uplay/GOG Galaxy). And we always try to keep up, but this is not always possible due to Wine developing (not fixed in Wine yet) or due to lack of time (we not getting to it to fix because of lack of time).

Anyways, I worked down the list from popular games to less popular games. The Wrapper upgrades do not only contain fixes of Steam, but may also improve performance and have bugfixes. If your game(s) is/are in the list I advise to backup the existing wrapper somewhere and delete it in Porting Kit and reinstall the updated port. Enjoy!

List of updated Steam wrappers:
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
Elderscrolls III – Morrowind
Sniper Ghost Warrior 2
Southpark Stick of Truth
Call of Duty – World at War

Steam sources added for 18 Wheels Of Steel Long Haul and Extreme Trucker!

Kinguin is supporting Porting Kit/Paulthetall.com with a small amount of “Bonus EurBalance” per month so I can purchase a couple of games per month in order to port them. This month I purchased 5 Steam games to make new game ports and extra Steam sources for existing game ports. Two of them are 18 Wheels of Steel Long Haul and Extreme Trucker. Both games have besides a Gamersgate Source, now also a Steam source (=Windows Steam Client install where you can add the game serial, and then download and play the game).
