New Porting Kit has landed! Including ARM version for Apple Silicon!

Great news! After a long wait, it’s finally here! A new Porting Kit version with support for the new Sikarugir engines (successor to Wineskin). On top of that, we now have 2 versions of Porting Kit! One for Intel-based Macs and one for ARM (Apple Silicon). This is because the shared version had become very slow on Apple Silicon. With the arrival of the separate version for Apple Silicon, Porting Kit is now much faster on those Macs as well! So I’m happy to announce this release!

This new release is now mandatory to be able to play the latest game ports and all new ones to come. I added about a dozen new cool titles last week, which will be introduced in separate blog posts. The Steam ports will now work again, allowing you to download games without issues. This also applies to Battle.net ports. Ubisoft Connect still has issues, but a new engine update will fix that as well in the near future.

For both versions, the update is being pushed through Porting Kit. However, for Apple Silicon, it’s recommended to manually download the new ARM version and replace the old one with it. This is because the update system for Apple Silicon was also broken, in addition to the “extreme slowness” bug. This update system has been fixed in the ARM version of Porting Kit.

This release will require Mac OS 12 or higher. Next release will support from 10.15.4 Catalina and Higher.

So for Intel, update using Porting Kit itself will be fixed later so download the 6.7.0 version manually from Portingkit.com. For Apple Silicon, download the new ARM version directly from here… This post will be sticky for a while so everyone will download the new ARM version for Apple Silicon Macs.

  1. Thank you so much for the hard work. I have noticed though that on the steam DXVK build, the Unity games that used to work before now crash at the start. I dont know if its for every Unity game but the ones i have tried like Travelers rest or moonlighter have that issue.

  2. When I tried to install the new Steambuild 32/64 Direct3D app, the installer started but then failed saying: WS11WineWine64Bit9.3 not found. I’ll include the console log.

  3. @mario Try D3D Metal Steambuild and mail be about this, so I can take a Look

    @Ben, This is super wierd, try to clear all your caches of portingkit using the Portingkit top bar –> tools –> Clear caches –> and clear all portingkit caches. Also make sure the “Experimental” version is not checked in the portingkit settings. Somehow it tries to use a way old Engine somehow in your case.

  4. Also we removed the 16GB restriction for D3D metal games. This wasn’t always required (16GB) making it impossible for 8GB Apple Silicon Mac users to play D3D Metal games. This should be possible now (if at least the game doesn’t require more video RAM).

  5. I just downloaded the Intel version on an Intel iMac (macOS Sequoia with OCLP). AOE DE installed without any issues. However, when I try to launch the game, I get the message “Unsupported Environment – This application requires Apple silicon and macOS 14 Sonoma or higher.” Is this a bug?

    Age of Empires DE does not start on my M1-Mac. :-(

  7. @Fulvio, Yes, this is correct. Since an update of the Age of Empires 2 DE I couldn’t make it work using DXVK (which also works on INTEL Macs with good GFX cards). So only with D3D Metal (so for Apple Silicon only).

    However, we are looking into an issue with the DXVK version of the engine, so if this is fixable, then it will also work back for Intel based Macs.

  8. @stephan. Yes I hope as well regarding Ubisoft Connect. For Age of Empires DE it should be working. I played it myself including multiplayer. So I would like to see your specs in this case.

    It´s a Mac Mini with M1 and 8GB RAM, MacOS 26.
    Installation: No problems.
    Start process in Steam is starting…
    …and ends after a few seconds.
    No chance.
    AoE2 DE is running great.

    I downloaded the ARM version and replaced my current install, as instructed. however it beachballs every time I open it and I’m unable to use it. Any troubleshooting advice?

    I am finally able to download Age of Empire II DE. However, the game cannot be launched for some reason. Btw I am using a mac mini m4.

  14. Had the Age of Empires 2 DE back on DXVK for testing purposes, changed it now back to D3Dmetal, so please try again for those people. For Intel Users, you need to wait for a little bit, but most likely found the issue so hold on some more.

  15. @ Christian, you most likely haven’t downloaded the latest portingkit version 6.7.0 yet. Get it from the Portingkit.com website.

  16. For anyone like Luke getting the “beachball” try again: Launch Porting Kit, wait a few seconds, then click on GAMES->INSTALLED in the left-hand column. After doing that, go to the menu bar and choose to clear all caches. Porting Kit will then take you through the initial install process (because clearing all caches resets all settings as well) after which it will work properly without “beachballing” requiring a force-quit.

  18. Having issues with AoE II DE launching from steam. The game installed just fine, but hitting play in steam, it acts as if it will load and then “resets” and says “play” again and never launches. Wondering if anyone has had the same issue or any advice?

  21. @Paulthetall I did download the 6.7.0 Arm version twice now. Unfortunately the bug is still there. Unfortunately everytime I try to download it on steam, my network works but the drive doesn’t do anything and goes down after 6% of download. Could it be any kind of setting I have? It worked well till the Aoe2 patch in August. I couldn’t download the update, then I deleted the hole program and thought I just download it a gain completely but since then I have this download bug.
    Would be very pleased for help!

  26. Age of Empires 2 DE only works at the moment for Apple Silicon Macs. For The Intel version we need to find a solution because DXVK is still not working properly in the new engines.

    About Rockstar Game Launcher. I haven’t tested it yet.

    Just a special note: I’m on Mac Book Air M4 (Silicone) and initially after direct install of 6.7.0 over the previous version, the steam download was not working. I uninstalled completely Porting Kit with removal of Wine caches (yes I lost some of installed games, but it is not a big deal) , then did a fresh install and now steam download and playing games is 100% functional !

  28. I think it would be a good idea to put a notice on the download page that older versions of Porting Kit should be fully uninstalled before installing the new version. Users won’t lose any of their installed games, the wrappers don’t get affected. And once the new version of Porting Kit is installed the existing wrappers can be manually added to Porting Kit’s list of installed games. At the very least, the first thing users should do is clear all caches which will do essentially the same thing as uninstalling, including taking the user through the setup process again.

  29. I’m not sure if I understand well, but does it mean that it’s normal that AOE2 DE does not work yet if we have an Intel Mac? In my case, it blocks at the moment of launching Steam after all the previous step, it always that steamwebhelper can’t launch and every options suggestions don’t work.

Like Eric’s last post, I’m having the same problem with Steam/AoE2 HD and DE since the update and a clean install for Intel Mac (the HD version still worked on the prior version of Porting Kit before I did the clean install to update). Now, sometimes Steam will load on the first try, but then neither game will start. Steam will crash. Tried another clean reinstall of Steam and now neither game will download before stalling and Steam crashing. Relaunching I get the steamwebhelper error message every time and all options to troubleshoot it have no effect. Steam loads then crashes after 2-3 seconds on most attempts. I am at a loss. 🫤

  31. I cant open the new porting kit for mac os. If deleted the old version and downloaded the new one. If I open it trough contents/MacOS/Porting Kit. Then I get this:

  35. @paulthetall Thanks for checking. Seems like it’s an Intel vs Silicon issue. Doesn’t work as described on my Intel Mac. Every time I open AOE2HD directly or through Porting Kit, Steam updates for a few seconds then loads and opens Steam then closes after a second or two. Rinse repeat. For AOEIIDE, it won’t open past the steamwebhelper error message.

  36. So grateful to have just learned about Porting Kit today!

    I’m on an M1 Mac and have installed Dark Forces: Jedi Knight using Porting Kit. It installed fine, but the problem is it runs in a small window. I can’t find any options in Porting Kit to get it to display at full screen. Is there something I can do or a setting I can change?

  37. @silvergish, I updated the Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight port today with a “Mod”. Try reinstalling it. I can now play fullscreen because of that mod.

  38. @reilly, can you delte the age 2 HD port and reinstall? I changed the engine, can you do one more check to see if Steam now more stable on Intel? I checked here and can now download and install the Age of Empires 2 HD version fine on my Intel HD laptop.

  39. @paulthetall Thanks for trouble-shooting. Your fix did the trick for AoE2 HD on my Intel Mac. Was able to open Steam through the port, download and install the game files, and play the game. Unfortunately, the steamwebhelper error continues for AoE2 DE when trying to open that port. Cannot get beyond the error message to Steam to download/install the game and attempt opening/playing.

  40. I’ve had RA2 installed from before macOS 26. I updated to it but have been unable to run the game, even after updating to the latest porting kit as well. It’s not downloading the game on steam too. Anyone know how to solve this?

  41. @reilly. Try again please (delete port and reinstall). I think it should work now for intel based Macs.

  42. @Archer, after downloading Red Alert 2, you need to delete ddraw.dll as mentioned in the port description. Then you can play it fine. Tested it yesterday.

  43. @paulthetall Thank you for your continued efforts to resolve this. Alas, no joy. Performed clean install of AoE II DE port after seeing your latest message. No change. No response when clicking on app file in app folder on Mac, which works with the HD game. When attempting to open and play through Porting Kit after reinstalling the port nothing happens for about 3 minutes after clicking play, then steamwebhelper error dialog box opens stating not working. Options offered for troubleshooting around swh do not work and lead back to the same error message after 2-3 minutes for each option.

  44. @reilly, Age of Empires 2 HD, works perfectly fine on Intel based macbook pro. So no issues here on latest update of the port. About Age of Empires 2 DE I have no solution yet (for Intel based macs). Was purely talking about Age of Empires 2 HD.

  46. Thank you Paul, donation made to reward your labours. Has anyone managed to get a game called astrometica to run ? I got it to load with the DXVK steam port, but it does not show the game graphics beyond the menu screens. All other steam builds crash.

  47. I’ve managed to get much further with running Team Fortress 2, I installed a new version of Steambuild 32/64bit Direct3D, managed to install TF2 from the Steam library. When I run it, it appears to start, the screen goes black for a few moments and then it goes back to Porting Kit and it appears to have crashed. There isn’t much in the logs, I’ll attach the last few lines.

    It feels like we’re very close to getting it to run but not quite there.

    @graham, when was last time you tested another Steambuild? Try again please very recently changed some stuff. Can you retry? D3Dmetal Steambuild is for Apple Silicon only (just for your info) and your best pick if you have Apple Silicon.

    @Ben, I have to look at that one specifically. Can be a lot of things causing that.

  49. Thank you for taking the time to reply Paul (another donation made after I write this). Over the last week I have downloaded each of the new steam builds (Macbook Pro, Apple M3, 36GB, system 15.6.1). They all download and run steam. After tens of hours downloading astrometica for each, all launch Astrometica. Two freeze on the initial splash screen (restart, reboot time), DXVK (X11) launches the game, the start menu appears, the game launches and music plays, the game interface comes up but the contents of the game screen are black, sound plays. The cursor moves and I can quit the game (no reboot required! :) ) but the game graphics are absent.

  50. @graham, always appreciated. We are working on a DXVK fix for the latest Wine 10 Engines, if that is fixed. A good change it will run in the DXVK Steambuild by then. Keep an eye on the blog coming time.

  51. Juste tested (again) Among Us: “Failed to initialize graphics. Make sure yu have DirectX11 installed, have up to date drivers for your graphics card and have not disabled 3D acceleration in display setting. InitializeEngineGrphics failed” :-(

  52. @Fulvio, Do you have the same with the steambuild D3Dmetal engine? Or do you have an Intel Based Mac, in that case that won’t work, and you need to wait until we fixed that DXVK issue in the latest engine.

    As I told you before I had problems with AoE DE on my M1 Mac. It didn´t start.
    Now with your new DXVK Steambuild it works fine like AoE2 DE did before.
    Strange but I´m happy now.

  55. hi Paul, thanks for looking into it. but my issue is, i haven’t fully downloaded RA2 after installing the steam client. the download gets interrupted and/or doesn’t continue. it also crashes frequently on launch. i’m on an intel mac btw.

  56. would also like to add, I am able to install the client, login to steam and start the download. the download gets stuck at < 100MB / 1.4GB most of the time, before the download rate slowly goes down to 0 bps and never recover.

    restarting the steam client will just crash every time I run it

  57. Was able to get Shadow Empire and Flashpoint Campaign Cold War to run on a M3 through Steam. Seems the forum is down so figured I’d post here. Panzer Corp 2 did not work…something about a 3d driver needed.

  59. @Mathias and @Archer: You require latest Portingkit 6.7.0 whicjh you need to download and replace the old Porting Kit with. If you still have the issue, then you have to clear all Porting Kit caches and then reinstall the Game port of Age of Empires 2 DE (so you gave to delete the old game port first).

  62. hi Paul, I did install the new porting kit 6.7.0. I’ve cleared the caches too and have also reinstalled the steam client multiple times. the download still gets interrupted for sone reason and never fully completes

  63. With the new porting kit install I ran into:
    Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition minimum specification requires a DirectX 11 compatible display adaptor. This computer does not meet that requirement.

  64. Thanks for your efforts! My daughter got Aoe2DE running on her ARM Mac without deleting the videos, but the videos do not run. Do you know if there is a way to fix that? Maybe install a codec inside the port or something?

  65. Update to my “DirectX 11 compatible display adapter” issues. I installed dxvk via winetricks and that got the game working. I also needed to add RetinaMode “Y” under HKCU\Software\Wine\Mac Driver in order to get 4k graphics, otherwise it was running it half resolution, but consequently Steam is very small.

  66. @dave you most likely installed Age of Empires 2 HD instead if the DE (Definitive Edition). The DE version has the DXVK winetrick applied on install.

  67. i’ve noticed a significant drop in performance when running a recording software like medal for mac and OBS and playing steam games on the new porting kit version that I did not experience beforehand. Any possible culprits or solutions? I want to make TF2 videos again

  70. Among us works after the update of port, but now I get a shadow glitch where half or more of the screen becomes black while playing AU. Does anyone know a way to fix it?

  71. The new 0.8B version of Live for Speed appears not to work currently, I can load into the game fine but I get a blank screen as soon as i load into a track, is there a known way to fix this??

    The github repo shows last release being 6.7.1 but from the portingkit website, when you select download, 7.0.1 is downloaded. This is what led to my question if this is legit.

    I uninstalled the old version (from the Porting Kit menu), then downloaded the new ARM version for macbook air M3.
    Even after starting the app from scratch, when I would use the top menu (porting kit, edit, view, tools, etc) and click there the app freezes and I must force quit.
    Do you know any solution for this?

    Also, Moto Racer 3 for example does not start at all, installed from GOG library.

    I have a 2017 Intel mac. I’m currently experiencing the same issue with Age of Mythology Retold as I do with my Age of Empires 2 DE. Could it be because they use the same engine?

    I already have AOE2 DE installed and I can bypass the update bug by turning my wi-fi off before start up. Works that way, but sadly no update can be possible :(

  78. as an FYI, anyone that has trouble installing apps with a -86 error I installed rosetta on my mac first and the error went away!
